With two highly successful consoles under its belt and a shoe in the handheld market with the PSP, SONY began work on the Playstation3, which, unlike it predecessors (that where generally the technical underdogs), would be a high end, immensely powerful console able to hold up to its rival the Xbox360. However, the power comes at a cost, financial at that. The PS3 is the most expensive console out of the box (even with the recent price cuts), trying to make up for it in part with its Blu-ray playback and free online play.

Like the Xbox 360 and the Wii, the system bears it own downloading service, the PSN (Playstation Network). Offering a selection of downloadable content for numerous games, as well as demos, trailers and complete copies of classic PS1 games and new, smaller scale games in the same vein as the ones on Live Arcade and WiiWare (as well as terribly slow to update firmware). While the system is capable of playing all discs made for the original Playstation, only certain models of the PS3 are able to run Playstation2 games.
